Louise y Becky son dos chicas que están revolucionando el mundo del arte y la ilustración con su estilo lleno de color y formas orgánicas llevadas a la fantasía. Juntas forman el colectivo Good Wives and Warriors. Girl power total!

• Who are the girls behind good wives and warriors? / ¿Quiénes son las chicas detrás de Good Wives and Warriors?

We are two good friends who met at Art school, started working together on projects and found that we much preferred working as a combined force than individually. It took at few years and different incarnations before we started working together as Good Wives and Warriors in 2007/8. Rebecca means “Good Wife” and Louise means “Warrior” / Somos dos buenas amigas que se conocieron en la escuela de arte, empezamos a trabajar juntas en proyectos y descubrimos que preferimos trabajar combinando nuestras fuerzas que individualmente. Tomo unos pocos años y diferentes encarnaciones antes de que empezáramos a trabajar juntas como “Good wives and Warriors” en el 2007/8. Rebeca significa “buena esposa” y Louse significa “guerrera”.

• How did the idea of working collectively appear? / ¿Cómo surgió la idea de trabajar colectivamente?

We started organising exhibitions together when we were studying painting in Glasgow and things really just moved on from there. When we graduated we set up in business together but that soon changed shape into Good Wives and Warriors. There is a strength and a comfort in working collectively, and it also much more fun than working by yourself! / Empezamos organizando exhibiciones juntas mientras estudiábamos pintura en Glasgow y las cosas realmente se movieron a partir de ahí. Cuando nos graduamos iniciamos un negocio juntas pero pronto cambio a Good Wives and Warriors. Hay una fuerza y comfort en trabajar colectivamente y también es mucho más divertido que trabajar tú solo.

• What is the best and worst of making art? / ¿Qué es lo mejor y peor de hacer arte?

The best thing when making art is the feeling that you have created something your are genuinely proud of and the worst is the opposite, when the outcome does not feel honest. / Lo mejor es el sentimiento de que has creado algo realmente tuyo y genuino, y lo peor es lo contrario, cuando lo que surge no se siente honesto.

• You have worked for many brands, did you like to work for one specially? / Han trabajado para muchas marcas, ¿Les gustó más trabajar para alguna en especial?

In terms of commercial brands, we really enjoyed working with Absolut on their new Vodka campaign earlier this year. Absolut have an interesting heritage as a brand and we got to meet some great people. / En términos de marcas comerciales realmente disfrutamos trabajar con Absolut en su nuevo campaña de Vodka, a principios de este año. Absolut tiene una interesante herencia como marca y conocimos algunas personas geniales. 

• Is there a special story to remember for some of these brands? / ¿Hay alguna historia especial con alguna de estas marcas?

The Absolut project was really fun, painting massive bottle in a giant warehouse in Lisbon whilst suspending on swings! We were given free reign to do whatever we wanted for the design which was refreshing. The painting was used for a international commercial campaign so we were treated really well and got very excited by the catering/wardrobe! 
/ El proyecto con Absolut fue realmente divertido, pintamos una botella enorme en un almacén gigante en Lisboa, suspendidas en un columpio! Nos dieron completa libertad para hacer el diseño que nosotras quisiéramos, el cual fue refrescante. La pintura fue usada para una campaña internacional así que fuimos tratadas realmente bien y estuvimos muy emocionadas con el abastecimiento/un guardaropa!

• How do you define your style in the illustration? / ¿Cómo definen su estilo de ilustración?

 Detailed, often sprawling and imaginative. We like to use imagery from the world of science and nature, turning the fundamental into the fantastical / Detallado, a menudo extenso e imaginativo. Nos gusta usar las imágenes del mundo de la ciencia y la naturaleza, convirtiendo lo fundamental en lo fantástico.

• I personally love the projects “Atlier Chairs” and “The Dimension Dome”, can you talk a little about them?  / Personalmente me encantan los proyectos “Atlier Chairs” y “The Dimensión Dome”, ¿Podrían hablar un poco de ellos?

We first made the “Dimension Dome” for the Manchester Science festival and then recently recreated it for an exhibition as part of Paris design week. The geodesic dome is made of of cardboard fastened together with metal bolts and was suprisingly difficult to construct. Inside is painted with imagery about the origins of the universe and string theory. You can crawl inside and be alone in your own private universe! The chairs were painted for Adidas in Melbourne, Australia and were painted with antipodean floral and fauna. We worked onto the leather chairs with permanent markers and it felt like very detailed vandalism! / Primero realizamos “Dimension Dome” para el Manchester Science Festival y recientemente lo recreamos para una exhibición como parte de la semana del diseño en París. El domo geodésico es de cartón sujetado con pernos de metal y era sorprendentemente difícil de construir. En el interior está pintado con imágenes sobre los orígenes del universo y la teoría de cuerdas. Uno se puede meter dentro y estar a solas en su propio universo privado!. Las sillas fueron hechas para Adidas en Melbourne, Australia, y fueron pintados con las antípodas flora y fauna. Hemos trabajado en los sillones de cuero con marcadores permanentes y se sentía como un vandalismo muy detallado.

• Becky if you could choose a color for Louise, What would it be and why? And Louise if you could pick a color that does not ever represent becky, the same question. / Becky, ¿si pudieras escoger un color para Louise, ¿cuál sería y porqué? y Louise, ¿si pudieras escoger un color que no represente a Becky?

Louise would be red, the colour of her bicycle. Becky is a very colourful person so to find a colour that does not represent her is very tricky… it would have to be some shade of muddy grey/beige. Something very dull and lifeless! / Louise sería roja, el color de su bicicleta. Becky es una persona muy colorida, así que encontrar un color que no la represente es muy difícil… tendría que ser algo sombreado como gris/beige. Algo muy opaco y sin vida!

• Few girls work as a duo in the world of art and illustration of the way you do, What advice would you give to girls who would like to follow your steps? / Pocas chicas trabajan en duo dentro del mundo del arte como lo hacen ustedes, ¿Qué consejo le darían a las chicas que quieren seguir sus pasos?

I think collaboration can be a difficult thing and it is important to work with someone who shares similar values to you. Having some common ground is essential, as is having the same goals and ambitions. I hope that there isn’t a gender divide in the world of art and illustration and think that the same idea would apply to boys as well as girls. / Creo que la colaboración puede ser algo difícil y es importante trabajar con alguien que comparta valores similares a los tuyos. Tener algunos puntos en común es esencial, como tener las mismas metas y objetivos. Espero que no exista una brecha que divida géneros en el mundo del arte y la ilustración y creo que lo mismo aplica tanto en chicas como para chicos.

• What is coming for GWAW? / ¿Qué se viene para GWAW?

We have an exhibition next week in London called “The Squaring of the Circle” at the Space in Between Gallery in Hackney. We are showing 16 new drawings that we have been working on for a while and will do a painting on the gallery floor. We are looking forward to working onto the floor because it is something we have wanted to do for a long time. We will put the pictures on our website in mid December so you can check it out then! / Tenemos una exposición la próxima semana en Londres llamada ”The Squaring of the Circle”, en Between Gallery de Hackney. Estamos mostrando 16 nuevos dibujos que hemos estado trabajando durante un tiempo y haremos un cuadro en el suelo de la galería. Estamos ansiosas de trabajar en el suelo, ya que es algo que hemos querido hacer desde hace mucho tiempo. Vamos a poner las fotos en nuestra página web a mediados de diciembre para que pueda echarle un vistazo!
